He crawled out onto the grass, and started to wander around. “Where am I?” he thought out loud.
“Planet Geminus,” said a voice.
“Pardon?” said Double.
“Planet Geminus,” said the voice again.
“OK” said Double, “before I say anything else, I’ve got a couple of questions. One is, who are you? And two is, why am I here?”
But all he got was, “you know…”
He sat up, panting, “and one last thing, who am I?” But no answer came.
A figure loomed over him, a strange, tall, muscly one. “Superman.” Said the man. Double just sat there, as of course, he had never heard of ‘Superman.’ “And you?” said Superman.
“Um… I don’t know,” said Double.
“You must know your own name,” said Superman “think of something happy,” he said, and flew away. So, Double did what he was told, and thought of something happy, and then something he never knew he could do happened. “Hello,” said a cheery voice. “Hello,” said Double, “I don’t know who I am,” they both said at exactly the same time! “Are you me?” they both asked, again in perfect formation. They both laughed. Double had created a clone of himself!
“I just made you!” exclaimed Double. They did everything together. One day, there was a race. Double and his clone were interested in taking part - the prize was going to Earth, and they thought it sounded cool. They signed up to participate, but when they saw the list of people running, they thought they would never stand a chance. On the start line they were put at the back, as they were new. But when they started, however fast they ran, they would never get tired, and they were soon in the lead! That’s when Double found out about his second power - super speed!
Sat in the flying saucer, having accepted the prize of a journey to Earth, Double plummeted down through the planet’s atmosphere. It was getting colder and colder. Earth was nowhere near as hot as Geminus. Once he had landed, he went to nowhere in particular, which just happened to be a school! In he went and he was told off for running away! He loved to show off his clone power at ‘school,’ he soon developed the name ‘Double.’ But something awful happened - he was put in an orphanage. One day, when he was sad, he looked out of the window and thought of the world, and he flew straight out!
Amazed, he carried on, all the way back to the school. As he flew across the sky, people watched in awe, as they encountered this wonderful scene. Then... thud! He crashed, but not into a building, but a person, a very tall one for that matter! His Dad (not that he knew it) stood in front of him. And, in a robotic voice, he said, “I… am… Jode. I… lonely. I… take… you… for… me.” It wasn’t nasty, it was just the kind of speech that sent a shiver down your spine. “OK,” said Double, “you can have us if you beat me!” Now, for everyone that could hear him (which wasn’t actually very many people), that sounded like the most ridiculous thing in the world - Jode was at least 10 times the size of Double - but to prove it wasn’t, he threw a rock so fast at Jode that he dodged it only by a few millimetres! Jode grinned, and burnt a giant hole in the road in front of him with his laser eyes. “Now, we’ll see who’s actually better!”
Double flew to the town square, his mind racing, but of course he had not shown Jode his copy, and he decided he wouldn’t until he really had to. Jode was already there when he showed up and fired a laser at Double but he dodged it. Next, Double created his clone once more, and briefly explained what he needed to do, and how to distract Jode. Then, off they both went, one of them dancing around in front of Jode, the other sliding along the ground, through Jode’s legs, then climbing up right in front of his face. He quickly jumped down onto his foot, waited for the laser to come, so all Jode would do would be fire at himself! The Doubles thought they had defeated him, but Jode destroyed the land around himself and ran away, leaving both Doubles in a cloud of dust. But the village was free, and that was all that mattered. He had also chased the villain away, but Jode was always there causing trouble in Doubles’ dreams!
